Liquid penetrant testing reveals defects that break the surface of a component, across a wide range of materials — including the non-magnetic ones that magnetic particle testing cannot inspect.

How it works

The surface is cleaned and a penetrating liquid is applied, which is drawn into any surface-breaking discontinuity by capillary action during a dwell period. Excess penetrant is then removed from the surface and a developer is applied, which draws the trapped penetrant back out and spreads it — magnifying a defect that would otherwise be far too fine to see. Fluorescent penetrants are examined under ultraviolet light, which gives high contrast in a darkened inspection area.

Why it is specified

  • It works on materials regardless of whether they are magnetic — stainless steels, aluminium and other alloys included.
  • It handles complex shapes that would be awkward to inspect by other means.
  • The equipment is portable, so it suits site work.

Limitations to be aware of

Only defects that are open to the surface can be found — anything subsurface will not show. The surface must be clean and non-porous, since contamination or a porous coating will either block the penetrant or produce misleading indications. For internal flaws, use ultrasonic or radiographic testing instead.

Liquid penetrant testing with CAST
