Positive material identification verifies the chemical composition of an alloy against its specification, so you can confirm that the material actually installed is the material the design called for.

How it works

A hand-held analyser is placed against the component and returns its elemental composition. That result is compared against the specified alloy grade. The test is non-destructive and takes seconds per point, so a large number of components can be verified in a single visit.

Why PMI matters

Alloys that look identical can behave very differently in service. A material mix-up during fabrication or a maintenance replacement — the wrong grade of stainless steel, a carbon steel fitting in an alloy line — may not be visible on inspection, but can lead to premature failure under temperature, pressure or corrosive conditions. PMI is how that risk is closed out.

Typical uses

  • Verifying incoming material against the mill certificate before fabrication starts.
  • Confirming alloy grade on installed components during maintenance or a turnaround.
  • Checking weld consumables and completed welds where the filler metal grade is critical.

PMI confirms what a material is — it does not assess whether that material contains flaws. Pair it with ultrasonic or surface methods where integrity also needs to be established.
