A load test is a test conducted to determine whether an object, equipment, structure or system can safely handle the required load or weight. In simple terms: testing under a specified load to verify performance and safety.

How it works

A known test load — normally a stated proportion of the rated or safe working load — is applied in a controlled way and held for the specified period while the item is checked for deflection, permanent deformation, slippage or any other sign of distress. The load is then released and the item re-inspected. Results are recorded against the applicable standard or your specification.

Common types of load test

  • Crane load test — testing a crane by lifting a specified weight to ensure it can operate safely.
  • Lifting equipment load test — testing shackles, hooks, slings and lifting beams with a proof load.
  • Pile load test — applying a load to a foundation pile to verify its load-bearing capacity.

Where it fits

Load testing verifies that an item performs safely under load; it does not look for internal or surface defects. It is often combined with visual inspection and non-destructive testing of critical welds and load-bearing components, such as magnetic particle or ultrasonic testing, before and after the test.

Load testing with CAST

Tell us the equipment, structure or system to be tested, its rated capacity and the standard or specification it must be tested to, and our technical team will advise on the test load, method and documentation. Work is carried out on site in Bintulu and across Sarawak.
